Knowing how an HYSA works is only part of the process. Before opening an account, you should compare your options and understand the requirements attached to each one.
When comparing HYSAs, consider:
APY: How much can your money currently earn?
Minimum Opening Deposit: How much money do you need to open the account?
Minimum Balance: Do you have to maintain a certain balance?
Monthly Fees: Does the bank charge a maintenance or service fee?
Direct Deposit Requirements: Do you have to receive direct deposit to qualify for the advertised APY?
Other APY Requirements: Do you have to make a certain amount in deposits, maintain a specific balance, or complete another requirement?
Deposit Insurance: Is the bank FDIC-insured or the credit union federally insured by the NCUA?
Access to Your Money: How can you withdraw or transfer your money, and how long do transfers take?
Physical vs. Online: Do you need access to a branch, or are you comfortable managing your savings online?
Customer Service: How can you contact the institution if something goes wrong?
The highest APY does not automatically mean the best account for you.
For example, an account paying a higher APY but requiring a large balance may not make sense for someone starting with $500. Another account could offer a slightly lower APY with no deposit requirements or monthly fees.
The accounts below are examples for research and comparison only. EverFaith Ministries does not endorse or recommend any particular financial institution.
APYs are variable, so use the links to verify the current APY before making any decision.
(Research Date: August 2026)
SoFi Checking & Savings

Ally states that its APY is variable and that its savings account currently applies the APY across its balance tiers. Because the current APY wasn't reliably displayed in the official page returned during our research, students should check Ally's live rate page for the current number rather than us hard-coding an outdated rate into the course.
Compare Before You Choose
Don't choose an account from this list simply because EverStart Academy included it.
Choose at least three savings accounts and research their current information directly from the financial institutions.
Write down:
Bank: __________
Current APY: __________
Minimum Opening Deposit: __________
Minimum Balance: __________
Monthly Fee: __________
Direct Deposit Required?: Yes / No
Other APY Requirements: __________
FDIC/NCUA Insured?: __________

Then repeat for Accounts #2 and #3.
Which account best fits your needs, and why?
Once you've researched your options and selected an account, the process will generally look something like this:
Step 1: Go directly to the financial institution's official website.
Avoid opening an account through an unfamiliar link, advertisement, text message, or email.
Step 2: Verify the institution and account.
Confirm the account's current APY, fees, minimums, requirements, and FDIC or NCUA insurance.
Step 3: Gather your information.
Financial institutions commonly request identifying and contact information when opening an account.
Step 4: Complete the application.
Follow the bank or credit union's account-opening process and carefully review the disclosures provided to you.
Step 5: Fund your account.
Depending on the institution, you may be able to transfer money from another bank, use direct deposit, deposit a check, or use another available funding method.
Step 6: Set up your account.
Create a secure password, enable available security features, review your account settings, and consider setting up automatic savings if it fits your goals.
Step 7: Keep checking your account.
Your APY can change. Periodically review your rate, account requirements, fees, and whether the account continues to meet your need
Important
The rates listed in this lesson are a snapshot, not a ranking or recommendation. APYs and account terms can change at any time. Always click the financial institution's official link and verify the current terms yourself before opening an account.
